FLOOD AT SHADY LANE POULTRY

JUNE 7, 2008

Five feet of flood water running through my poultry yard

Some of my 8'x 4' bantam breeding pens floating away

Below is a layer house after the waters started going down - At least the ducks were having a good time!

AFTER THE FLOOD - THE CLEANUP

You can see from the debris on the window screens below how high the water was.

This brooder house is 12' by 8 ' and 6 feet tall at the top and only the roof was visible.

The flood waters pushed it about 500 feet through a fence and into some trees.

We just got this fence up 2 weeks before.  The flood pushed this house through it.

The houses below were pushed up against trees or they would have been gone too.

Fortunately only the poultry yard was affected.  Our homes did not get flooded or damaged.

I lost nearly all the bantam breeding stock, most of the large fowl breeding stock and

nearly all of my 2008 hatched replacement large fowl started birds.   About 500 chickens in all.

I was able to recover all the houses with nothing more than minor damages.  We are currently rebuilding our flocks.
